For many years, schools have been running the "Milk and Fruit for Schools" program with the aim of promoting healthy eating habits among children; it is very important that the program continues its work this school year and in the years to come.
This week, on October 14, 2025, at the beginning of a government meeting, Minister of Agriculture Armands Krauze treated his fellow ministers and state secretaries to products from the European Union and Latvian state-supported "Milk and Fruit for Schools" program – apples and milk, which children and young people receive free of charge in schools.
Over the years, this program has proven its importance by enabling thousands of schoolchildren to consume milk, fruit, and vegetables on a daily basis. These products not only promote children's health, but also help to raise awareness of a balanced diet and its importance in everyday life.
The Ministry of Agriculture continues to improve the school meal system to provide children and young people in educational institutions with healthy and tasty meals prepared primarily from local food products on a daily basis.
The ministry is currently reorganizing the school meal system, strengthening short food chains and promoting opportunities for local producers and entrepreneurs to actively participate in school meals throughout Latvia.
