On 17 June, as part of the Interreg OASIS project, the Rural Support Service (RSS) organised an online meeting with specialists from local governments in the Kurzeme region. The meeting demonstrated how high-quality satellite imagery can be used in their daily work. Real-world examples and specific cadastral data were analysed during the meeting, including urban settings such as fields, buildings and solar panel parks, to show what information can be seen in orthophotos and various satellite images, including those recently acquired.
The high quality of the images and the regularly updated satellite imagery received a great deal of interest, as it is an indispensable tool for daily work, allowing changes in the environment to be detected in near real time.
The RSS will continue to organise such activities to educate and inform local governments about the possibilities of using satellite imagery. Satellite imagery is planned to be used more extensively in the future for continuous territorial monitoring, which will enable local government specialists to track changes in the natural and urban environments remotely and promptly. With more precise geospatial information about areas, future activities can be planned more successfully and monitoring functions can be carried out more effectively.
This activity is being implemented as part of the Interreg VI-A Latvia-Lithuania 2021-2027 programme, specifically the OASIS project "Optimizing service availability using integrated Earth observation and artificial intelligence solutions for the development of innovative solutions." The project will result in an artificial intelligence tool being implemented that will use high-quality satellite data from the EU's Copernicus Sentinel-2 programme with a resolution of 1 metre. This tool will be used to create accurate satellite images and the data will be compiled according to uniform standards. These accurate satellite images will then be published and made available to farmers, local governments, researchers and other interested parties.
