Berka's rural farmstead, "Kliņģeri", is a family farm located in Tārgale Parish, Ventspils Municipality. Andris and Jana Berki left city life in Ventspils behind to embrace a life in the countryside and farming, where nature is an integral part of everyday life. They have been primarily engaged in sheep farming for over 13 years, specialising in the rearing of Romanov sheep, while also developing crop production and providing services to other sheep farmers.
The farm is certified organic and rears over 300 purebred Romanov sheep. The flock has been carefully built up over the years, with particular attention paid to breeding.
Significant support from the European Union has played a key role in the farm’s development, strengthening its infrastructure, improving the production environment, and promoting sustainable development.
The flock provides meat, processed products, sheepskins and wool, while the farm emphasises organic farming and improving soil fertility using deep litter compost. Jana has also set up a processing workshop on the farm where she produces freeze-dried sheep meat products, meadow herbs, and meadow sorbets made from wild plants.
Development has continued with the help of European Union funding projects and state aid payments. A tractor and front loader were purchased and a livestock shed was built. In 2025, a secure pasture fence was erected, significantly improving animal welfare and farm safety. These investments have enabled the farm to become stable and competitive.
Today, ‘Kliņģeri’ is one of the most significant flocks of Romanov sheep in Latvia, built up by the Berku family over the years through hard work, experience and perseverance.
