On 12th of May 2026, specialists from the Rural Support Service (RSS) held an online meeting with representatives of the State Forestry Service (SFS) to demonstrate how high-quality satellite imagery could be used to monitor forests more effectively.

During the meeting, the SFS representatives were introduced to the latest technological solutions and shown how high-quality images can help them monitor forest conditions quickly and accurately. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the data, the meeting participants analysed various types of orthophotos and current satellite imagery. Several examples from years 2025 and 2026 were analysed, showing logging sites and changes in forest stands. This enables specialists to identify changes in forest stands much more precisely and respond promptly to situations requiring immediate monitoring or further management planning.

SFS representatives praised the technology's capabilities and welcomed the opportunity to examine and analyse specific situations using high-resolution images.

RSS will continue to organise activities of this kind, as they educate specialists on innovations in geospatial data and ensure more effective national-level resource planning and monitoring.

This activity is being implemented as part of the Interreg VI-A Latvia-Lithuania 2021-2027 programme, specifically the OASIS project "Optimizing service availability using integrated Earth observation and artificial intelligence solutions for the development of innovative solutions." The project will result in an artificial intelligence tool being implemented that will use high-quality satellite data from the EU's Copernicus Sentinel-2 programme with a resolution of 1 metre. This tool will be used to create accurate satellite images and the data will be compiled according to uniform standards. These accurate satellite images will then be published and made available to farmers, local governments, researchers and other interested parties
