ZS Lauri: An organic farm where you can hear the bees buzzing
Founded more than 30 years ago in the Mežvidi parish of the Ludza district, the Lauri farm proves that organic farming is not only possible, but also promising. The farm primarily grows grain, but it also keeps bees and currently cares for 120 colonies.
The farm has almost 400 hectares of agricultural land, where it grows traditional crops such as rye, oats, buckwheat, and peas, as well as less common crops like hemp and vetch.
Over the years, the farm has amassed a substantial fleet of machinery, which is consistently updated and replaced. With the support of the European Union, the farm plans to purchase new equipment, including a seeder, cultivator, sprayer, harrows, and hay rakes, as well as build an insulated garage and gravel yard. These investments will increase the area of cultivated agricultural land, improve grain quality, and reduce environmental impact.
The farm pays particular attention to environmentally friendly technologies, such as no-till farming and direct sowing. With the new equipment, the farm plans to cultivate at least 80 hectares of land using these methods, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions and improving soil structure.
Guntars, the owner of Z/S "Lauri," has proven that organic farming is environmentally friendly and economically sustainable, providing opportunities for continuous development. The farmer is actively working to sell organic grain in Latvia and foreign markets.
