The farm “Rīgmaļi” is located in Abava Parish, Talsi Municipality, and over the years has grown from a small farm into a large two-sector enterprise. Since 1995, Māris Bērziņš and his wife Juta have been developing the farm, providing ten jobs for local residents. Their sons, who have been learning the farm work since childhood, also participate in the farm, providing significant support in daily farming activities.
Currently, Rīgmaļi manage more than 1,100 hectares, developing two main sectors – grain and dairy farming.
The majority of income comes from grain farming, mainly winter wheat and winter rapeseed. Dairy farming, including the sale of young cattle and beef cattle, provides the rest of the income. The herd consists of approximately 250 cattle, including 140 dairy cows. As Māris Bērziņš emphasizes: "It is safer to rely on two sectors – they complement each other and balance out market fluctuations."
Feed is provided by the farm itself – by growing feed grains and preparing hay, silage and straw.
Co-financing from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) has made a significant contribution to the growth of the farm. With its support, modern equipment has been purchased, drainage systems have been reconstructed and new storage facilities have been built. This has made it possible to significantly expand the scope of operations and introduce innovative solutions into everyday processes.
Today, Rīgmaļi continues to grow and develop, remaining faithful to the countryside and farming principles. It is a family farm managed by several generations, whose work will most likely be continued by their sons in the future.
