Latvia's countryside is home to enterprising and determined people, some of whom are working tirelessly and diligently to create strong, sustainable organic farms. One such example is the Liepkalns farm, an organic farming enterprise that is leading the way towards sustainable and innovative agricultural development.
Liepkalns was founded in 1992 in the Ilzeskalns parish of the Rēzekne region, and its activities have always been based on respect for the environment and natural resources. For several years, the farm has specialised in crop and livestock farming, observing the principles of organic farming. Since 2016, the farm has been managed by a new generation – Aleksejs Danilins, who has clearly defined the priorities for development. Currently, the focus is on organic grain farming, with buckwheat cultivation playing a particularly important role. In order to achieve greater added value for the primary agricultural products produced, the farmer processes part of them into ready-made food products, thanks to the support of the LEADER project.
The farm manages 231.95 ha of agricultural land. Targeted work and innovative solutions have allowed Liepkalns to develop, modernize its technical base, and ensure high-quality organic production.
As part of the latest initiative, thanks to support from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), the farm has introduced environmentally friendly solutions, such as maintaining green manure fields and growing intercrops. To make this process more efficient, specialized machinery and equipment have been purchased to ensure better storage and transportation of organic grain.
ZS "Liepkalns" plans to continue the growth of organic farming in the future by introducing new technologies that will increase productivity and improve farm efficiency.
We hope that this story will inspire other farmers to take confident steps towards development and innovation!
